Stormwater Charges and Credits in Mississauga

This session will introduce and explain the core concepts of an emerging infrastructure financing policy being implemented in Mississauga. Participants will learn the background, mechanics and anticipated outcomes of Mississauga’s stormwater charges and credit program.
 
Stormwater managers in urban Ontario today are often faced with the combined pressures of intensification, aging infrastructure and the changing nature of storms. Mississauga is introducing a funding alternative; property owners will be charged a fee based on the amount of impervious (hard) surface on their properties. This is a fair and dedicated way to fund this essential service. The charges are paired with a credit program, which creates new financial incentives for the installation and maintenance of on-site stormwater controls and green development practices.
