This multimedia display will showcase the impacts of community-led initiatives, which use art to connect people to public spaces. Facilitated by STEPS, these initiatives challenge the way people view public art and have started a dialogue on how The PATCH Project treats underutilized and forgotten spaces in Toronto. Since 2010, the STEPS Initiative has led several large-scale public art installations—including the World’s Tallest Mural in St. James Town—that have engaged thousands of community members of all ages, but particularly youth. Through its award-winning PATCH Project, it has transformed underused spaces across the city, such as construction sites and empty storefronts, into an ongoing curated exhibit. At the same time they help to build the capacity of emerging artists to exhibit in the public realm.
