This session will explore urban design and planning tools for community building that supports sustainable and healthy development and that maintains, enhances and creates local character. The tools will include: design-based tertiary plans, community design guidelines, development design guidelines, urban design briefs, sustainable/healthy development guidelines/indicators, design review and architectural control, communication and visualization. Examples illustrating the use of these tools will be drawn from the City of Brampton. Additionally, the session will highlight the Development Permit System and its capacity to preserve character and revitalize communities within their historic context.
