If Canada is going to maintain its current economy, it will need to continue to grow. Natural population increase has been dropping since the 1960s – excluding our indigenous populations, which continue growing rapidly. As a result, population increase is, and will continue to be, driven almost entirely by migratory growth. This session will introduce a Growth Plan for Canada based on the proposition of the Century Initiative which is focused on “responsibly and thoughtfully growing the population of Canada to 100 million by 2100.” It will start by describing how our population will change over the next 82 years; identify which parts will grow most dramatically; and describe the balance between natural and migratory population increase. It will also present options for the dispersion of future growth across the country and will discuss a preferred physical Growth Plan, and a logical phasing of growth. It will also elaborate on the Plan’s implications for a re-balancing of power between indigenous and non-indigenous nations – along with the need for new national policies related to immigration, economic development, and the planning and financing for new infrastructures and housing.
