Heritage Conservation and Urban design – Challenges, Success and Balance

October 06, 2015

12:00pm-1:00pm

This session will explore examples of heritage conservation districts that pose differing sets of questions concerning urban design:

  •  What approaches can be taken when working in areas that do not represent the typical built form of heritage conservation districts (e.g., commercial cores and residential neighbourhoods)?
  • How can planners facilitate good urban design in existing built-up areas that may contain a wide range of built form and open space types when working with communities who have varying opinions on the need for strict design controls?
  • How can planners navigate the balance between heritage and urban design best practices and community input as to what should be considered good design and/or best practice? And wherein lies the balance?

Every heritage conservation district has its own unique set of challenges. The session will highlight projects in Oakville, Bala, Kingston, Guelph and Oil Springs.
