The "Getting to Form Based Zoning" Charrette

October 08, 2015

10:15am-4:00pm

Maximum 40 participants. Pre-registration is required.

Many municipalities in Ontario have recently completed new official plans and will be developing new comprehensive zoning by-laws. They will have the opportunity to introduce form-based zoning as a mechanism to advance community building from a site-specific scale to an area-wide or community-wide scale.

This charrette will focus on developing a made-in-Ontario approach to form-based zoning. The Charrette will reflect on the drawbacks of continuing to use the conventional zoning by-law. Participants will be guided through an interactive exercise where groups will be challenged to take an example built form typology and develop a form-based provision that would permit that form. Following the Charrette, the presentation and feedback from participants will be developed into a “how to” toolkit on form-based zoning and made available to the public.

Maximum 40 participants. This Charrette has been jointly developed by the OPPI Community Design Working Group and CNU Ontario.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Participants will learn what to think about when drafting Form-Based Zoning By-law.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to debate the merits and discuss their challenges in an open forum.
  • Contributions from participants will be incorporated into a “How To” toolkit for Form-Based Zoning
